Five BAAK Types Try to Plan a Surprise Party. It Lasts Nine Messages

Five personality types, one surprise party, one group chat that leaks. A birthday story read from the Korean birth chart (saju).

Somebody had the idea to throw a surprise party. Somebody always does.

They made a group chat. They named it "Operation Quiet." Five BAAK types, one goal: keep a secret from their friend until the door opens and everyone yells.

The door did not open the way anyone planned.

Message one: the moment someone says "keep it simple"

07/10

NORTH

NORTH

I set the standard. Keep up.

The NORTH opened the chat the way a NORTH opens anything.

"We need a plan, a time, and a list. No changes after the list."

08/10

PEARL

PEARL

Richer than I look. Guess again.

The PEARL was already in the chat.

"Shopping is the only real decision," the PEARL wrote. "Everything else is decoration."

06/10

COMET

COMET

My timing is immaculate. Yours?

The COMET arrived late, which is on brand.

"what did I miss," the COMET wrote, forty messages in.

10/10

FLARE

FLARE

Too much? That's the point.

The FLARE was typing before the chat even loaded.

"Okay so I booked a room, a cake, two cakes, a guy who plays the drums, and a banner. The banner says SURPRISE in lights. Real lights. I have the lights in my car."

Message two: the cake debate, which is where it always goes

The NORTH asked for the budget. The PEARL gave the budget. It was a very specific budget.

The FLARE had already spent triple it.

"It's a BIRTHDAY," the FLARE wrote, in capitals, which was not an argument but felt like one.

The PEARL tightened. Started counting. "We are canceling the drums."

The COMET ignored the drums. The COMET was already solving a different problem: the birthday friend had to be lured, blind, into a room, on time.

"Leave that to me," the COMET wrote. "I'm great at luring."

04/10

MOTHLIGHT

MOTHLIGHT

I knew before you said it.

And then the MOTHLIGHT typed for the first time.

"Quick question. Who is in charge of the actual secret?"

Nobody answered, because nobody was.

Message three: the plan goes to the wrong group

The MOTHLIGHT had been in the chat the whole time, saying nothing, reading everything.

"You put the friend in a two-person chat with you to coordinate the lure," the MOTHLIGHT wrote. "Everyone else is in this chat. The friend sees the invite to the other chat. The friend is not an idiot."

Silence.

The FLARE: "I'll fix it."

The FLARE could not fix it. The FLARE fixed it louder. It got worse.

The NORTH, rigid now, started issuing rules. The PEARL started recounting the lighting receipt. The COMET booked a decoy dinner at the wrong time.

And the MOTHLIGHT, who had noticed the next problem as well, decided it was more interesting to see if anyone else would.

The door opens

The friend showed up.

Early. Holding a bag. Saying "I got the invite, thanks, why is there a banner."

The five of them stood in the room. The lights were on. The drums guy had left. The PEARL was holding a receipt like a scroll.

The friend looked at the banner. Read it.

"SURPRISE," the friend said. "You know it's my birthday next week, right."

Silence. Then the NORTH opened the chat again.

"Same plan. Next week. Nobody changes the list."

The MOTHLIGHT, finally, typed: "I knew. I was waiting to see who'd notice."

Which one would you be in this chat?

The one who books too much? The one who does the budget? The one who shows up late but perfectly? The one who noticed everyone was being dumb and said it in message two? Or the one whose plan quietly leaked?

Every group chat has all five. Be honest about which one is you.

Fiction starring the five BAAK types, for fun. Types come from the Korean birth chart (saju). No predictions, no claims about anyone real, just a party that went sideways.
