Your Four Pillars

Your chart is four columns. Each column is a pillar, one for the year, month, day, and hour you were born.

On top of each pillar sits a heavenly stem, one of ten. Below it sits an earthly branch, one of twelve animals. That makes eight characters in total, which is what ba zi means.

The year branch is your zodiac animal, but the full chart is much more than that.

Your Day Master

The stem on the day pillar is your Day Master. It stands for you.

Every other stem and branch is read in relation to that one character. If your Day Master is Sun Fire, the rest of the chart tells us what feeds your fire, what drains it, and what controls it.

The Day Master is not your zodiac animal. It comes from the day, not the year.

Your Element Balance

The five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The calculator counts how often each one appears in your eight characters.

You might have three metal characters and no water, or a mix of all five. This balance is not good or bad on its own. It just shows what your chart is made of.

A chart heavy in one element reads differently from a chart that spreads across all five.

Why the Hour Matters

The hour of birth fills the last pillar. A day has twelve two hour blocks, each tied to one branch.

If you do not know your hour, you only get six characters instead of eight. That can change the Day Master strength and the element balance, so the closest hour you do know is worth entering.

Without the hour, the chart is incomplete and some readings turn less specific.

Questions people ask

How accurate is a BaZi calculator without birth time?
The hour pillar is missing, so the calculator only plots six of eight characters. The Day Master stays the same if the date is correct, but strength and element balance may shift. A birth time within two hours makes a full chart.
What is my Day Master?
Your Day Master is the heavenly stem on your day pillar. It stands for you, and every other stem is read against it. The calculator labels it clearly after you enter your birth date.
What does my BaZi chart tell me?
It maps your Day Master, the four pillars, the element balance, and the ten forces between stems. It does not prove anything or claim to predict a fixed path. It gives a structured way to read how parts of a chart relate to you.
Is BaZi based on my birthday or birth date and time?
It uses the full birth date and the birth hour, and the year and month turn on solar terms, not January 1 or Lunar New Year. A birthday alone gives the day stem but not the hour pillar. The time matters for all eight characters.
What are the four pillars in my chart?
The four pillars are the year, month, day, and hour of birth. Each pillar has a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below, so eight characters in total. Your zodiac animal is only the year branch.
How is BaZi different from my Chinese zodiac sign?
Your Chinese zodiac sign is just the year branch, one of the eight characters. BaZi reads all four pillars together, with the Day Master at the center. That gives a much more specific chart than the year animal alone.
